2026 FIFA World Cup: Algeria Exit as Switzerland Advance, Extending Africa’s Round of 32 Disappointment

Algeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey came to an end on Thursday after a disciplined Switzerland side claimed a comfortable 2-0 victory in their Round of 32 clash, adding to the disappointing performances by African teams in the knockout stage.

The result means Switzerland progress to the Round of 16, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver next week, while Algeria become another African nation to bow out before the last 16.

Switzerland executed their game plan to perfection, frustrating the North Africans with a compact defensive structure before punishing them on the counterattack.

Coach Murat Yakin’s tactical approach proved decisive against Algeria, who were led by former Switzerland manager Vladimir Petkovic.

The Europeans took the lead in the 10th minute after winning possession deep inside their own half.

Young midfielder Johan Manzambi sparked a swift counterattack down the left before delivering a precise pass for Breel Embolo, who calmly finished from close range.

After going ahead, Switzerland tightened their grip on the contest by crowding the midfield and denying Algeria space to create meaningful opportunities.

The Desert Foxes struggled to break through the organised Swiss defence, with Ibrahim Maza’s effort just before halftime standing out as their best chance of the opening period.

Any hopes of an Algerian comeback were dealt a major blow shortly after the restart.

A failed defensive clearance fell kindly to Dan Ndoye, who kept his composure to fire beyond goalkeeper Luca Zidane and double Switzerland’s advantage.

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez had an opportunity to reduce the deficit moments later but could not convert, reflecting his side’s frustrating evening in front of goal.

Despite enjoying spells of possession, the North Africans found it difficult to create clear-cut chances against Switzerland’s disciplined defensive setup.

Granit Xhaka marshalled the Swiss midfield with authority as his team continued to threaten on quick counterattacks while limiting Algeria’s attacking options.

Although substitute Fabian Rieder missed a late opportunity to increase the scoreline, it had little impact on the outcome.

The defeat marks a disappointing end to Algeria’s World Cup campaign and continues the struggles of African teams in the Round of 32, with hopes of a deep run now resting on the continent’s remaining representatives.

Switzerland, meanwhile, march confidently into the last 16 after a composed and clinical display.
