Ivory Coast opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a narrow but vital 1-0 win over Ecuador, thanks to a late winner from substitute Amad Diallo in a tightly contested Group E encounter.
The Elephants endured a difficult evening against a physically strong Ecuadorian side that controlled large portions of the match and repeatedly tested Ivory Coast’s defensive structure.
However, the African side stayed disciplined, absorbed the pressure, and remained patient before striking at a crucial moment late in the game.

Diallo, who came off the bench to decide the match in the 89th minute, praised both the resilience of his teammates and the challenge posed by their opponents.
Speaking after the game, he admitted Ivory Coast expected a tough contest from the outset:
“We knew it was going to be a difficult match because we know the Ecuadorian players are physically strong.
“We couldn’t play into their hands; we had to impose our own game.”
Despite sustained pressure from Ecuador, Ivory Coast refused to lose focus or abandon their tactical plan, eventually finding the breakthrough in the closing stages to secure all three points.
“And that’s what we tried to do. They put us in a difficult position, obviously. But we stayed clear-headed, we stayed focused.”
The victory marks a strong start to Ivory Coast’s World Cup journey, with the result giving them early momentum in Group E as they look ahead to their remaining group fixtures.
Diallo emphasized the importance of the win, while urging concentration for what lies ahead:
“In the end, we gained three points. Now we need to focus on the next two matches.”
