2026 FIFA World Cup: Argentina leads Austria at halftime

Argentina is on course for a second straight win at the 2026 World Cup, leading Austria 1–0 at halftime in Group J thanks to a historic goal from Lionel Messi, who became the tournament’s all-time top scorer.

Right from the start of the match, the world champions took control of the ball and quickly created several dangerous chances.

Messi even had the chance to make history in the 8th minute on a penalty kick, following a foul on Lautaro Martinez in the box. But the Argentine captain missed his attempt, leaving the two teams tied.

Austria, however, never gave up. Ralf Rangnick’s men tried to respond with aggressive pressing and a few promising attacks, particularly down the wings.

Wanner even had a great header opportunity in the 21st minute, but failed to hit the target. Despite these efforts, the Austrians struggled to truly trouble Emiliano Martinez.

After several missed chances, Lionel Messi finally found the back of the net in the 37th minute. Left unmarked in the box on a cutback cross, the Argentine unleashed a powerful left-footed shot to beat Schlager and score his 17th World Cup goal.

It was a historic goal that allowed him to surpass Miroslav Klose and become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer.

While the lead remains slim on the scoreboard, Argentina largely controlled the first half against a courageous Austrian team that was often overwhelmed by the bursts of speed from Messi and his teammates.

The world champions will now have to build on their lead in a second half that promises to be another hard-fought battle.
