Egypt and Iran shared the spoils in an entertaining first half after both sides found the net inside the opening 15 minutes in their crucial Group L encounter.
The Egyptians made the perfect start, taking the lead as early as the fifth minute through Mahmoud Hassan”, who finished clinically after being set up by his teammate to put the group leaders ahead.
Iran responded strongly and thought they had a golden opportunity to equalise in the 11th minute when they were awarded a penalty. However, Egypt goalkeeper Oufa Shobeir produced a vital save to deny Mehdi Taremi from the spot, preserving his side’s advantage.
The reprieve was short-lived, though, as Iran eventually levelled three minutes later. Ramin Rezaeian struck in the 14th minute to make it 1-1 and restore parity after sustained pressure from the visitors.
The remainder of the half became increasingly physical, with both teams collecting two yellow cards each. Iran’s Hossein Kan’aani and Ahmad Nemati were cautioned in the 19th and 43rd minutes respectively, while Egypt’s Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” and Yasser Ibrahim also entered the referee’s notebook.
With the score locked at 1-1 at the break, Egypt remain in control of the group standings, but Iran have shown enough resilience to suggest they are capable of upsetting the leaders in the second half.
