Iran and New Zealand played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in their opening Group G match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Both teams produced an intense and fast-paced encounter filled with attacking moments and constant pressure. The result leaves the group completely open after an exciting first round of matches.

New Zealand made the stronger start and took the lead through E. Just in the 7th minute. Iran responded well and gradually regained control before equalizing in the 32nd minute thanks to R. Rezaeian. The first half ended level despite several dangerous opportunities from both sides. After the break, E. Just struck again in the 54th minute to restore New Zealand’s advantage and temporarily place his team at the top of Group G.

However, Iran refused to give up and found another equalizer in the 64th minute through M. Mohebi. The two nations continued pushing for a winning goal, but the score remained unchanged until the final whistle.

Following this draw, Group G remains completely balanced as Iran, New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt all sit level on points after the opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
