2026 FIFA World Cup : Mahrez and Mandi announce retirements

Riyad Mahrez and Aïssa Mandi have brought their international careers to an end following Algeria’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Fennecs lost 2-0 to Switzerland in the round of 32, bringing their tournament to a disappointing close. Shortly after the final whistle, Mahrez confirmed that the match marked his final appearance for the national team.

The 35-year-old captain admitted that Algeria had the quality to win but paid the price for costly mistakes. Mahrez leaves the national team after making 120 appearances, scoring 40 goals, and leading Algeria to the AFCON title. His departure closes one of the most successful chapters in the history of Algerian football.

Aïssa Mandi also announced his international retirement just hours after the defeat. The veteran defender, who became Algeria’s most-capped player, confirmed his decision during an interview with EN TV. With Mahrez and Mandi both stepping away from international football, Algeria now begins a new era after its disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
