2026 FIFA World Cup: Mexico secures Round of 32 spot

Mexico became the first nation to qualify for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating South Korea 1-0 at the Estadio Akron. The hosts battled hard in a tightly contested match before Luis Romo seized his opportunity in the 50th minute.

The Mexican midfielder capitalized on a costly handling mistake by the South Korean goalkeeper and scored the only goal of the game.

Mexico controlled the match with discipline and determination, while South Korea searched for an equalizer throughout the second half. Despite creating several promising situations, the Taeguk Warriors failed to break through the Mexican defense. This second consecutive victory gives El Tri six points and guarantees qualification for the knockout stage with one group match still to play.

South Korea remains on three points and must now secure its place in the next round on the final matchday. The Koreans will face South Africa in a decisive encounter on June 25 at the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey. Meanwhile, Mexico will welcome the Czech Republic at the Estadio Azteca and attempt to seal first place in Group A as it continues its impressive run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
