2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Niakhaté Rallies Behind Heartbroken Camara After Senegal’s Painful World Cup Exit

Senegal defender Moussa Niakhaté has offered an emotional message of support to teammate Lamine Camara following the Teranga Lions’ heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Belgium in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

Senegal looked destined for a place in the last 16 after racing into a 2-0 lead, only for Belgium to stage a stunning comeback and score three unanswered goals, completing one of the tournament’s most dramatic turnarounds and ending the African champions’ World Cup campaign in devastating fashion.

The painful defeat left several Senegal players visibly emotional at the final whistle, with Camara among those overcome by the result. Niakhaté admitted it was difficult to witness his teammate in such distress after everything the squad had achieved together just months earlier.

“I didn’t like seeing Lamine Camara in that difficult and painful state that you all saw. We were brothers five months ago when we won the Africa Cup of Nations, and we celebrated that together, and today we are all losing together,” Niakhaté said.

His remarks reflected the unity within the Senegal camp, emphasizing that while success had been celebrated collectively, the disappointment of their World Cup elimination would also be shared as one team.

Despite their early dominance, Senegal were unable to withstand Belgium’s second-half resurgence, turning what appeared to be a comfortable advantage into a crushing exit. Niakhaté’s heartfelt words served as a reminder of the emotional toll football can take, especially for a squad that had entered the tournament with high expectations after lifting the Africa Cup of Nations earlier in the year
