2026 FIFA World Cup: Tunisia sacks Lamouchi and appoints new coach

Tunisia has already made one of the biggest decisions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after dismissing coach Sabri Lamouchi following the humiliating 5-1 defeat against Sweden.

The heavy loss immediately increased pressure around the national team and pushed the Tunisian Football Federation to react quickly in the middle of the tournament. Lamouchi’s tactical choices and management had already received strong criticism after disappointing preparation matches against Austria and Belgium before the World Cup.

Only hours before his dismissal, Lamouchi had spoken publicly about his ambition to succeed with the Eagles of Carthage despite acknowledging the instability surrounding the national team coaching position. Appointed in January, the former Stade Rennais FC coach leaves after just five months with a record of one win, one draw and three defeats. Tunisian supporters and local media strongly criticized the team’s performances, especially after the defensive collapse against Sweden during the opening Group F fixture.

Tunisia has appointed Hervé Renard

To replace him, Tunisia has turned to experienced French coach Hervé Renard, who is expected to arrive in Mexico immediately to begin work with the squad. Renard will reportedly bring several members of his trusted staff while keeping Wahbi Khazri within the technical team.

Tunisia now hopes the managerial change can revive its campaign before crucial matches against Japan and the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
