Cape Verde’s remarkable run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been overshadowed by a serious off-field controversy after captain Ryan Mendes was accused of raping a Brazilian translator during the team’s trip to New Zealand earlier this year.
According to multiple international reports, the alleged incident took place in March while Cape Verde were in Auckland for the FIFA Series.
The woman, who was hired as a translator and operational support staff for the Cape Verde delegation, alleges that Mendes forced his way into her hotel room and sexually assaulted her after a team function.
She also claims she suffered physical injuries during the alleged attack and later underwent a forensic medical examination.

The case is currently under investigation by New Zealand Police.
Authorities have confirmed that inquiries are ongoing, although no criminal charges have been announced publicly at this stage.
Under New Zealand privacy laws, police have not officially identified the suspect, but Brazilian outlet Globo first named Mendes in its reporting.
FIFA has acknowledged the matter, stating that it is in contact with New Zealand authorities and that it takes allegations of misconduct extremely seriously.
However, football’s world governing body has declined to comment further while the investigation remains active.
The allegations have emerged during what has otherwise been a historic tournament for Cape Verde.
The African island nation became one of the biggest surprise packages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by reaching the knockout stage for the first time in its history, setting up a Round of 32 clash against Argentina.
Despite the investigation, Mendes has continued to feature for Cape Verde as the legal process unfolds.
It is important to note that an allegation is not proof of guilt, and Mendes remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
