Salisu Yusuf has added another significant chapter to his coaching career following his appointment as head coach of Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan.
The appointment sees the experienced Nigerian tactician complete a remarkable coaching circle involving some of the country’s most traditional and successful clubs.
Yusuf has now coached four of Nigeria’s prominent traditional clubsides — Rangers International, Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars.
His coaching journey with Nigeria’s established clubs began with Rangers International of Enugu, before he moved on to other major sides, including Enyimba and Kano Pillars.
Beyond the traditional giants, Yusuf has also managed Nasarawa United and El-Kanemi Warriors, further establishing himself as one of the most experienced coaches in Nigerian domestic football.
He also served as an assistant coach at the now-defunct Dolphins Football Club and Lobi Stars, gaining valuable experience before taking on more prominent managerial responsibilities.
Yusuf’s coaching career has also extended beyond Nigeria. His most recent assignment before the Shooting Stars appointment was with Beninoise club Coton Sport FC, giving him additional experience of football outside the Nigerian league environment.
His extensive experience also includes work with Nigeria’s national teams. Yusuf has coached both the Super Eagles and the national Under-23 side, putting him among the select group of Nigerian coaches to have worked at both senior and youth international levels.
Before venturing fully into coaching, Yusuf enjoyed a playing career with several Nigerian clubs. He represented ABU FC, Ranchers Bees and El-Kanemi Warriors, while also earning opportunities with both Nigeria’s junior and senior national teams.
His transition from player to coach has seen him steadily build a reputation as one of Nigeria’s experienced tacticians, with a career spanning domestic football, international assignments and club football outside the country.
Yusuf also holds a CAF A coaching licence, one of the key qualifications required for top-level coaching on the continent.
His appointment at Shooting Stars therefore represents more than just another coaching job. It marks the latest stage in a career that has taken him through some of Nigeria’s biggest clubs and national teams.
With Shooting Stars preparing for another competitive campaign, Yusuf will be expected to bring his wealth of experience to the Ibadan-based club and help the Oluyole Warriors challenge for honours.
For the 64-year-old coach, the move represents a full circle in Nigerian club football — having now taken charge of Rangers, Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars, four clubs with a long-standing place in the country’s football history.
