NFF Sacks Super Falcons Head Coach Justin Madugu and Coaching Crew

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has parted ways with Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu and members of his coaching crew.

The decision comes after a disappointing campaign for Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, who failed to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup following their recent setback at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Madugu was appointed to lead the Super Falcons after serving in the team’s coaching setup, taking charge with the responsibility of maintaining Nigeria’s dominance in women’s football on the continent and guiding the nine-time African champions to major international success.

However, the team’s recent performances have fallen short of expectations. Nigeria’s WAFCON campaign ended in the quarter-finals after a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, bringing an end to their hopes of claiming a record-extending 10th continental title.

The Super Falcons subsequently entered the World Cup play-in route but suffered another setback against South Africa, losing 2-1.

The result meant Nigeria missed the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition began in 1991.

The development represents a major change in the leadership of the Super Falcons as the NFF looks to rebuild the team and restore its position among the leading women’s football nations in Africa.

The federation is now expected to begin the process of appointing a new technical crew, with attention likely to focus on preparing the team for upcoming international assignments and rebuilding confidence within the squad.

A statement on the official X account of the NFF reads;

“The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper_Falcons to step down with immediate effect.”

Madugu’s departure also comes at a crucial period for the Super Falcons, with the NFF under pressure to ensure that the team returns to winning ways and remains competitive at both continental and global levels.

Further details on the reasons for the decision and the identity of Madugu’s successor are expected from the Nigeria Football Federation.
