Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has recalled the unusual circumstances surrounding his move to Bolton Wanderers, admitting that he joined the English club without carrying out proper research about the team.
Okocha, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers, revealed that he was initially convinced Bolton was a major club because of its proximity to Manchester United’s Old Trafford.
According to the former Super Eagles captain, Bolton’s sporting director told him the club was only about 10 minutes away from Old Trafford, a detail that influenced his perception of the team.
“I signed for Bolton without doing research. The sporting director said they were 10 minutes from Old Trafford, so I thought they were a big club,” Okocha said.
The Nigerian explained that during the recruitment process, he was shown the club’s impressive stadium, which further strengthened his belief that he was joining a well-established English side.
However, his expectations changed dramatically after completing the move and seeing the club’s training facilities.
“They showed me only the beautiful stadium. After I signed, I saw the tiny training ground and a three-person shower,” he recalled humorously.
Okocha’s comments have highlighted the humorous side of one of the most important moves of his illustrious career.
Despite his initial surprise at Bolton’s facilities, the transfer eventually proved to be a significant chapter in the Nigerian star’s career.
Okocha became a fan favourite at the club and played a key role during his time in England, with his creativity, technical ability and flair making him one of the Premier League’s most entertaining players.
His performances at Bolton helped cement his reputation as one of the finest African players to grace English football.
His memorable skills, spectacular goals and charismatic personality earned him widespread admiration from supporters.
