Cape Verde have appointed Humberto Bettencourt as their new head coach, succeeding Bubista, who guided the island nation to an impressive debut at the FIFA World Cup.
Bettencourt, 51, steps into the role after spending the past six years as part of Cape Verde’s coaching staff.
He previously served as an assistant under Bubista and was closely involved with the team’s historic World Cup campaign.
Cape Verde emerged as one of the surprise performers at the tournament in North America, reaching the knockout stage on their first appearance at the World Cup.
Their run eventually came to an end in extra time against Argentina.
The Cape Verdean Football Federation did not disclose the length or financial details of Bettencourt’s contract.
Bubista departed his position following the World Cup after accepting the managerial role at Moroccan club Renaissance Berkane.
The club reached the semi-finals of the African Champions League last season.
Bettencourt’s first major assignment will come in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Cape Verde are scheduled to travel to Mali on September 25 before hosting Rwanda four days later.
The new coach will be expected to build on the momentum generated by the team’s historic World Cup showing and guide Cape Verde towards another major international tournament.
