Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ World Cup Ball Sells for Over €2.8 Million at Auction

The ball used during Diego Maradona’s famous “Hand of God” goal at the 1986 FIFA World Cup has reportedly been sold at auction for more than €2.8 million, underlining the enduring global appeal of one of football’s most controversial and iconic moments.

The historic goal was scored during Argentina’s quarter-final clash against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.

Maradona punched the ball into the net ahead of England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, with the goal allowed to stand by the referee.

The Argentine football legend later famously described the incident as having been scored “a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God,” giving birth to one of the most memorable phrases in football history.

The match is also remembered for Maradona’s extraordinary second goal, in which he dribbled past several England players from inside his own half before scoring what many consider one of the greatest goals in World Cup history.

More than four decades after the tournament, the “Hand of God” incident continues to generate enormous interest among football fans and collectors, with the auction price of over €2.8 million reflecting the remarkable historical and cultural value attached to the moment.

Maradona went on to inspire Argentina to win the 1986 World Cup, cementing his status as one of the greatest footballers in the history of the game.

The sale of the famous match ball is another reminder that Maradona’s legacy remains as powerful as ever, with memories of his brilliance, controversy and unforgettable moments continuing to command worldwide attention long after his death.
