African talents proved to be the ultimate difference-makers as Coventry City fought off a determined Plymouth side to secure a 4–2 victory in a high-tempo contest packed with attacking flair,
Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi set the tone just three minutes into the match. Capitalizing on a sharp piece of playmaking from Ghanaian starlet Caleb Yirenkyi, Awoniyi opened the scoring with a clinical finish to put Coventry ahead early.
Awoniyi turned provider just two minutes later in the 5th minute, sliding a brilliant pass to Jack Rudoni to make it 2–0 and complete a whirlwind opening five minutes for the Sky Blues’ front line.
Despite Plymouth falling behind early, winger Xavier Amaechi kept the hosts within striking distance. With Plymouth trailing 2–1 following Oliver Irow’s 21st-minute effort, Amaechi showcased his individual sharpness in the 54th minute, turning home an equalizer to level the match at 2–2 and ignite the home crowd.
The momentum swung back to Coventry in the final quarter of the match. In the 67th minute, Jamaican international Ephron Mason-Clark found space in the box to convert a cross from Victor Torp, restoring Coventry’s lead.
Torp then converted a 78th-minute penalty to cap off the 4–2 scoreline, wrapping up a memorable performance headlined by Awoniyi’s goal-and-assist display and Yirenkyi’s crucial early assist.
