Malawi Junior Flames upbeat ahead of Zambia COSAFA Qualifier

The Malawi Under-20 Men’s National Football Team is upbeat ahead of its Group C opening encounter against old foes Zambia at Zimpeto Stadium in Maputo, Mozambique, as the Junior Flames begin their quest for qualification to the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Head coach Enos Chatama believes his charges have the talent, experience and depth required to compete strongly at the tournament, with several players having previously played together in the junior national teams, including at Under-17 level.

Chatama is also confident that the team’s preparations have put the players in good shape ahead of the tournament and insists they are not fazed by facing Zambia in their opening fixture.

“We have what it takes to face Zambia because we have met them before in COSAFA. The boys have improved, the morale is sky-high in camp and we have a strong team,” said Chatama.

The coach also highlighted the presence of foreign-based players such as Yusuf Natunga, Mwisho Mhango and Eli Rundles, saying their international exposure adds another dimension to the squad.

Chatama believes the experience gained by the players while playing outside Malawi has helped broaden their football knowledge and will be valuable as the Junior Flames compete against some of the region’s strongest youth sides.

With the opening fixture providing an early test of their credentials, Malawi will be looking to start their campaign on a positive note before facing Botswana and Comoros in their remaining Group C matches. The Junior Flames are aiming to navigate the group successfully and secure qualification for the CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations.
