Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has outlined his ambition to win the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria and represent the country at the FIFA World Cup.
The 24-year-old Coventry City goalkeeper is currently with the Super Eagles squad preparing for Nigeria’s 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Okonkwo made his senior international debut in May when he featured for Nigeria against Zimbabwe at the Unity Cup.
He was subsequently included in the squad for the June international friendly matches against Poland and Portugal.
The goalkeeper could now make his competitive debut for the Super Eagles when Nigeria take on Madagascar in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener on Friday.
Speaking to reporters in Uyo on Wednesday, Okonkwo said winning the AFCON and playing at the World Cup are among his major ambitions.
“I want to win the AFCON and compete at the World Cup. That’s one of my biggest ambitions as a footballer,” Okonkwo said.
Despite his ambitions, the former Arsenal academy goalkeeper said he remains focused on developing his game and learning from the more experienced players in the Super Eagles camp.
Okonkwo believes his previous experience with the national team has helped him settle into the squad and understand what is required at international level.
He said he intends to continue improving while making the most of the opportunity to work alongside established Super Eagles players.
“At the moment, it’s still early. I want to learn from everyone and learn new things. The previous camp was good for me,” he added.
“I want to take things in my stride, keep learning, keep improving, and hopefully one day contribute positively to the Super Eagles.”
With competition for the goalkeeping position expected to remain strong, Okonkwo will be hoping to earn more opportunities as Nigeria begin their journey towards the 2027 AFCON in Morocco.
