AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Onyeka Targets Winning Start Against Madagascar

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka says Nigeria must aim for victory in every match as the three-time African champions begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria will kick off their qualifying campaign against Madagascar on Friday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, with Onyeka stressing the importance of collecting maximum points on home soil.

Onyeka Demands Positive Start

The Brentford midfielder believes the Super Eagles must approach the qualifiers with a winning mentality, starting with the encounter against Madagascar.

Speaking during a media parley in Uyo, Onyeka said Nigeria’s objective should be to win every game.

“Just like every other match that we’ll be playing, we have to win every game,” Onyeka told journalists.

The midfielder acknowledged the disappointment of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but said the team must now turn its attention to the next major assignment.

“I know we’re quite disappointed not to qualify for the World Cup, but now we’re back.

“We have something to prepare for, which is the AFCON next year.”

Super Eagles Warned Against Complacency

Despite Madagascar being Nigeria’s opening opponent, Onyeka believes the Super Eagles must remain fully focused and avoid underestimating the Barea.

He said playing in front of a home crowd makes victory even more important for Nigeria.

“For us, we want to win this game, especially when we’re playing on our own ground.

“We don’t underestimate anything,” he added.

Onyeka also stressed that the Super Eagles should concentrate on delivering a strong performance rather than becoming distracted by their opponents.

“We focus only on ourselves. We don’t focus on the opponent. We have to play well to win.”

Nigeria will be hoping to make a strong start in Uyo before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau in their second AFCON 2027 qualifying fixture.
