Rivers United produced a dominant performance on Thursday, defeating Kun Khalifat 5-0 in a one-sided Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) encounter in Port Harcourt.
The emphatic victory marked Rivers United’s biggest win of the season and further underlined their strong start to the NPFL campaign, with the Port Harcourt club maintaining their unbeaten record.
Salman Abubakar was the star of the show, scoring twice, while Chijioke Mbaoma, Wasiu Falolu and Ekene Awazie also found the net as Rivers United ran riot against the visitors.
Rivers United controlled possession and territory from the opening minutes, although they had to wait until the 27th minute to break the deadlock.
Abubakar opened the scoring with an excellent finish from outside the penalty area, giving the hosts a deserved lead and setting the tone for a dominant display.
Kun Khalifat struggled to cope with Rivers United’s attacking movement and sustained pressure after conceding the opener.
The visitors went into halftime 1-0 down, but Rivers United quickly increased their advantage after the restart.
Mbaoma doubled the lead shortly after the interval, completing a move created by Alex Oyowah to put the hosts firmly in control.
With Rivers United continuing to dominate, Kun Khalifat found it increasingly difficult to contain the home side.
Abubakar then added his second goal of the match before Falolu and Awazie completed the scoring, sealing a comprehensive 5-0 victory for Rivers United.
The result represents a major boost for Rivers United as they continue their NPFL campaign, while Kun Khalifat will have to regroup after a difficult night in Port Harcourt.
