GPL: “It’s not going to be easy” – Ibrahim Tanko as Medeama begin title defence on top

Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko has acknowledged the challenge of retaining the Ghana Premier League title after his side moved to the summit with a 1-0 victory over Port City.

The defending champions secured all three points in their outstanding Matchday 2 fixture at the TnA Stadium on Wednesday, September 30, with Kelvin Nkrumah scoring in first-half stoppage time.

The victory takes Medeama to eight points, putting them top of the league table, level on points with FC Samartex but ahead on goal difference.

Tanko, however, expects a demanding campaign as other clubs look to challenge the reigning champions.

“It’s not going to be easy this season because all the teams are prepared, we are the defending champions, so definitely we are trying to maintain it.”

Medeama’s victory also ended Port City’s unbeaten start to their debut Ghana Premier League campaign. The newly promoted side were reduced to 10 men after Ransford Lartey received a red card in the 66th minute.

For Medeama, the result completes their outstanding early-season league schedule following the postponement of their Matchday 2 fixture due to their participation in the CAF Champions League.

Tanko’s side will now turn their attention to maintaining their early position at the top as they pursue a second consecutive league title.
