Carlos Queiroz Relieved of Duties as Ghana Boss After Disaster AFCON Qualifying Start
Carlos Queiroz will not continue as head coach of the Ghana Black Stars following a series of emergency showdown talks with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) executive committee.
The decision brings a sudden end to the 73-year-old Portuguese tactician’s short tenure, which began in April 2026. While Queiroz successfully led Ghana to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, his position became untenable following a nightmare opening to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
Ghana currently sit rock bottom of Group C with zero points from their opening two fixtures.
A 2–0 loss away to West African rivals Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké and a humiliating 4–2 collapse at home to Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Ghana squandered an early 2–0 lead.
Following Tuesday’s loss to Gambia, furious home supporters surrounded the VIP exits, directing their outrage at GFA President Kurt Okraku and demanding sweeping structural changes.
During the high-stakes meeting at the GFA headquarters, both parties reached an agreement to part ways. Queiroz had previously hinted at his willingness to step aside, noting after the match that he would walk if his departure was deemed the best solution for Ghanaian football.
The GFA is expected to announce an interim technical team in the coming days as the Black Stars look to revive their qualifying hopes ahead of the next international window.
