FIFA: Arsène Wenger, an unexpected threat to Infantino

Gianni Infantino’s bid for another term as FIFA president could face an unexpected challenge from Arsène Wenger. According to The Times, opponents of the current president are trying to convince the former Arsenal manager to enter the race ahead of the election scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco. Infantino, who secured re-election unopposed in 2023, faces growing criticism over his leadership, particularly following the backlash surrounding his proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise project.

The initiative aimed to attract approximately $4.2 billion from private investors by selling nearly 20% of a new entity responsible for commercial operations, including broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals. Critics questioned the lack of transparency and consultation, forcing Infantino to abandon the project in early August.

UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin and several other confederations have since pushed for stronger governance guarantees. Although Infantino continues to enjoy significant support, particularly among Africa’s 54 national federations, his opponents are struggling to find a credible candidate capable of uniting their opposition. Wenger, 76, could offer the experience and international standing they need, although he has neither declared his candidacy nor confirmed any intention to run.

Wenger’s potential challenge would carry particular significance because Infantino appointed him FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development in November 2019, following his departure from Arsenal after 22 years in charge. The Frenchman has since worked on youth development, football academies and technical analysis. However, he distanced himself from the FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal in August, saying he had learned about it through the media and describing its abandonment as “absolutely necessary.” His criticism raised questions about the extent of his alignment with Infantino. Whether Wenger will leave his technical role to enter the political arena remains unclear, but his name could become a focal point for those seeking an alternative to the incumbent president.
