RB Leipzig: Nkunku’s strong comeback after two seasons in the shadows

Christopher Nkunku is rediscovering his best form at RB Leipzig after difficult spells at Chelsea and AC Milan. The French forward struggled with injuries and inconsistency at Chelsea, where he scored 18 goals and provided five assists in 62 appearances over two seasons following his €60 million transfer in 2023.

His move to AC Milan brought eight goals and three assists in 35 matches, but he never found the consistency he wanted. A loan return to Leipzig with an option to buy has given the 28-year-old a fresh start at the club where he previously recorded 74 goals and 58 assists in 178 appearances between 2019 and 2023. “When the opportunity to join RB Leipzig arose, I seized it without hesitation,” Nkunku said after his return, expressing his excitement about playing again in front of the club’s supporters.

Nkunku has quickly made an impact, reclaiming a starting place and delivering decisive performances. After providing an assist against Borussia Mönchengladbach, he scored four goals, including a hat-trick in Leipzig’s 6-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. Only Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick, with five goals, has scored more than him in the Bundesliga, according to the source.

Nkunku credited his work on fitness during the international break for his progress, while coach Martin Demichelis praised the talent he displays in every action. Captain David Raum also highlighted his value to the team. Nkunku now wants to maintain this momentum and convince Leipzig to make his return permanent. Still under contract with AC Milan until June 2030, he has made clear that he feels comfortable back in Germany and believes he made the right decision to return.
