Desmond Ofei Confident Ghana U-23 Can Qualify for 2028 Olympic Games

Ghana U-23 head coach Desmond Ofei has expressed strong confidence in the Black Meteors’ chances of qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games, insisting that the time is right for the country to return to the men’s football tournament.

Ofei believes Ghana possesses the talent and determination required to secure qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, with preparations focused on giving the players the opportunity to demonstrate their quality on the international stage.

“We are 100% confident that we will qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games,” Ofei said, underlining his belief in the team’s ability to achieve the target.

The Ghana coach acknowledged that the country has waited too long for another appearance at the Olympic Games and believes the current generation has the potential to end that absence.

“I believe we can qualify because I feel the time is right. It has been way too long, and we are preparing well,” he added.

Ofei also highlighted the players’ hunger to prove themselves, stressing that the squad is determined to demonstrate the depth of footballing talent in Ghana and restore the country’s presence at the Olympic tournament.

“The boys are hungry to prove to the nation that there is a lot of talent in this country and that Ghana is one of the best footballing nations in Africa. It is up to us to show that, and as I said, the boys are hungry to prove themselves,” he stated.

Ghana last competed in the men’s Olympic football tournament at the 2004 Athens Games, where the Black Meteors exited at the group stage. The country’s best performance came at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, when Ghana won bronze to become the first African nation to secure a medal in men’s Olympic football.

With the 2028 Games approaching, Ofei and his technical team will be tasked with translating their confidence into results during the qualification campaign. Ghana will need to navigate the qualifying process successfully to secure a place in Los Angeles and give another generation of players the opportunity to represent the country on the Olympic stage.
