Kayode Pledges Future to Italy Despite Nigeria Eligibility

Brentford defender Michael Kayode has made it clear that his international ambitions lie with Italy, even though he is also eligible to play for Nigeria through his parents.

The 21-year-old, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, says he remains committed to earning a place in the Azzurri senior team after progressing through the country’s youth system.

“I will always prioritise Italy. I grew up wearing the Azzurri jersey from the youth levels,” Kayode told Tuttosport.

“It’s a dream I still hope to achieve soon, and I have no uncertainty about my choice.”

Kayode revealed he had been in discussions with former Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso ahead of the March World Cup playoff matches and even attended a dinner with other Premier League-based Italian players.

However, he was not included in the final squad.

“Things were going well and I felt part of the group, even though I wasn’t selected for the playoffs,” he added.

Despite his dual eligibility, Kayode has effectively signalled that his international future is firmly tied to Italy.
