Thiaw Defends Tough World Cup Calls, Backs Decisions Amid Sarr Debate

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has acknowledged the difficulty of finalizing his World Cup squad, insisting that every decision was carefully considered despite inevitable disappointment for those left out.

Speaking after unveiling his list, Thiaw admitted the selection process was anything but straightforward, particularly given the depth of talent available to him. “The squad list was not easy to put together,” he said. “Naturally, with some players missing out on the World Cup, the choices can be difficult. I had my certainties.”

His remarks come amid growing discussion around the omission of certain high-profile names, most notably defender Malang Sarr, whose recent performances have drawn widespread praise. Thiaw confirmed he had personally spoken with the player but remained firm in his stance.

“Regarding Malang Sarr, who has been talked about a lot lately, apart from the player himself with whom I was able to speak, I want to congratulate him personally because he has been named in the league’s team of the season,” Thiaw noted.

Despite acknowledging Sarr’s individual success, the Senegal boss emphasized that his decisions were guided by a broader tactical vision and team balance rather than individual accolades.

“I have made my choices, and I stand by them fully,” he stated.

With expectations high for the Teranga Lions heading into the tournament, Thiaw’s comments underline both the competition within the squad and the conviction behind his selections. As Senegal prepares for the global stage, attention will now shift from those omitted to the players entrusted with carrying the nation’s hopes.
