Songwe Border Take Early NDL Lead

Songwe Border United moved to the top of the NBS Bank National Division League table after edging Mzuzu City Hammers 1-0 at Karonga Stadium on Saturday afternoon in Matchweek Two.

The result took Songwe Border to four points, level with Ndirande Stars, who came from behind to beat Namitete Zitha 2-1 at Mpira Stadium. Songwe lead the standings on goal difference ahead of Sunday’s fixtures involving teams that started the weekend on three points.

At Karonga Stadium, Songwe Border secured maximum points through Dickson Mwangonde’s early strike in the 9th minute, assisted by Emmanuel Munthali, in a contest between two sides that were recently relegated from the elite league.

At Mpira Stadium, Ndirande Stars recovered from an early setback after conceding in the first minute through Namitete Zitha’s Precious Manduwa. Corazo Zonda equalised in first-half stoppage time before Moses Gunde struck late to complete the comeback.

Earlier on Friday, FOMO FC and Chilobwe United shared the spoils after a goalless draw at Mpira Stadium. Both sides created chances but failed to convert, with coaches from both camps pointing to missed opportunities as the major talking point.

Chilobwe United coach Elvis Kafoteka said the point was important after their opening defeat to Mighty Tigers but stressed the need for more confidence in front of goal, while FOMO coach Ntchindi Mhango said his side must improve composure in attacking areas.

Attention now turns to Sunday’s fixtures, where Mighty Tigers face Bangwe All Stars at Mpira Stadium, Embangweni United host Ntaja United at Rumphi Stadium, and Extreme FC meet Changalume Barracks at Owen Malijani Stadium in Mchinji.
