Abia Angels recorded a memorable 1-0 victory over Rivers Angels on Matchday 2 of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six, claiming their first-ever win in the competition and ending Rivers Angels’ perfect start to the tournament.
The Super Six debutants delivered a disciplined and determined performance at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, with Winner David emerging as the hero of the day.
The forward scored the decisive goal in the 26th minute, rising highest to head home and give Abia Angels a lead they would fiercely protect until the final whistle.
Having earned a draw in their opening fixture, Abia Angels entered the encounter eager to make a statement against one of the league’s most established sides.
They did exactly that, combining defensive resilience with tactical discipline to frustrate Rivers Angels throughout the contest.
Rivers Angels, who had begun their Super Six campaign with a victory, pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half.
However, Abia Angels’ backline stood firm under pressure, while their goalkeeper produced a series of inspired saves to preserve the slender advantage.
The result marks a significant milestone for the Umuahia-based club, who are making their debut appearance in the NWFL Premiership Super Six.
Their composed display against one of the tournament favourites has now announced them as genuine contenders for the title.
Winner David’s first-half strike ultimately proved enough to separate both sides, handing Abia Angels all three points and sparking celebrations among players and supporters alike.
With the victory, Abia Angels move up to four points from their opening two matches, strengthening their position in the race for the championship.
Meanwhile, Rivers Angels will be looking to bounce back quickly after suffering their first defeat of the Super Six campaign.
The result adds another intriguing twist to what is already shaping up to be a fiercely contested NWFL Premiership Super Six tournament in Port Harcourt.
