Mukau: “Cristiano Ronaldo is not the same as before”

Portugal failed to make a winning start to its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after settling for a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. The Portuguese struggled to impose themselves and failed to find their usual attacking rhythm. Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating evening as DR Congo defenders Chancel Mbemba and Axel Tuanzebe closely marked him throughout the match and limited his influence.

After the game, DR Congo midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau gave an honest assessment of the Portuguese superstar when journalists asked him whether his team had prepared a specific plan to stop Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Frankly, not really. We know he’s not the same as before. He’s gotten older, but he remains one of the greatest of all time. All my respect to him,” the Lille player said. His comments quickly attracted attention and sparked debate among football fans.

Despite his respect for Ronaldo’s remarkable career, Mukau suggested that opponents no longer view the Portuguese icon in the same way they did during his prime years. At 41 years old, Ronaldo continues to chase success with Portugal, but the draw against DR Congo highlighted the challenges he now faces at the highest level. Portugal will need stronger performances from its captain if it hopes to challenge for the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
