2026 FIFA World Cup: Cape Verde’s World Cup Fairytale Continues After Draw With  Uruguay

Cape Verde continued their remarkable FIFA lolWorld Cup journey by earning another valuable point after battling Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw in their second Group H match.

The tournament debutants once again showed resilience and determination as they followed up their opening draw against Spain with another impressive result, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage firmly alive.

Cape Verde stunned the South Americans in the 21st minute when Kevin Pina etched his name into the history books by scoring the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.

The midfielder unleashed a spectacular long-range strike reminiscent of Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos, leaving the Uruguayan goalkeeper with no chance and sending Cape Verde supporters into celebration.

Uruguay responded strongly and found an equaliser just before halftime through Maxi Araújo, who finished off a well-worked move to restore parity.

The winger continued to influence the contest and later provided an assist as Uruguay turned the match around shortly after the restart.

With momentum on their side, Uruguay took the lead when Canobbio found the back of the net, putting the two-time world champions in control and seemingly on course for their first victory of the tournament.

However, Cape Verde refused to surrender. Coach Bubista introduced Hélio Varela from the bench, and the substitute made an immediate impact.

Just 136 seconds after entering the game, Varela scored his first international goal, calmly finishing to bring Cape Verde level and spark wild celebrations among his teammates.

The equaliser set up a tense finale, with both sides pushing for a winner, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough.

The final whistle confirmed a hard-fought draw that leaves both teams with two points from their opening two matches.

For Cape Verde, the result represents another historic milestone in what has become one of the most inspiring stories of the tournament.

After holding Spain and now Uruguay, the African nation remains unbeaten and firmly in contention for a place in the next round.

Uruguay, meanwhile, will be disappointed not to have converted their dominance into three points.

Despite goals from Araújo and Canobbio, Marcelo Bielsa’s side must now secure a positive result in their final group game to boost their qualification chances.

With two matches played, both Cape Verde and Uruguay remain unbeaten, having recorded two draws each, setting up a dramatic conclusion to Group H.
