2026 FIFA WORLD CUP: Rudi Garcia explains how Belgium exploited Senegal’s collapse in dramatic comeback

Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia has revealed that his side anticipated Senegal would retreat defensively after taking a two-goal lead, a tactical shift he believes paved the way for Belgium’s stunning 3-2 comeback victory in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32.

The Red Devils overturned a 2-0 deficit to eliminate the African champions, scoring three goals to complete one of the tournament’s most memorable comebacks.

Reflecting on the match, Garcia said Belgium had expected Senegal to abandon their attacking approach in favour of protecting their advantage, describing the decision as a costly tactical error.

“We know teams like that: they lose their tactical structure towards the end of the match. We knew that at 2-0 they would do everything to protect their goal, which in my opinion is a serious mistake.”

The Belgian coach also stressed that his own team must avoid making the same error in future matches, warning against becoming overly defensive after establishing a comfortable lead.

“Remind me when we’re 2-0 up not to do that. Because when you concede a goal like they did at 2-1, the whole feel of the match changes.”

Garcia concluded by highlighting the significance of Belgium’s stoppage-time winner, insisting the decisive penalty that sealed victory was fully deserved.

“And then it was pretty good to score in stoppage time, from a completely justified penalty.”

Garcia’s post-match analysis offered a tactical explanation for Belgium’s remarkable turnaround, as the Red Devils capitalised on Senegal’s increasingly defensive approach to book their place in the Round of 16, while the Teranga Lions were left to reflect on a painful collapse after surrendering what had seemed to be a commanding lead.
