2026 FIFA World Cup : Nagelsmann resigns as Germany coach

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany head coach following the team’s disappointing exit from the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Although the 38-year-old initially expressed his willingness to remain in charge, Germany’s elimination against Paraguay and the intense criticism that followed ultimately led him to step down after talks with the German Football Association.

Nagelsmann had insisted after the defeat that he would continue if the federation wanted him to stay. However, German media reported that federation officials advised him to resign during a meeting that lasted more than three hours. The coach accepted the recommendation despite his disappointment, bringing his tenure with the national team to an end.

With Nagelsmann’s departure now confirmed, Germany has turned its attention to finding a successor. Reports in Germany indicate that Jürgen Klopp has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the national team. The German Football Association will formalize Nagelsmann’s exit as the country begins preparations for a new chapter after its disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
