2026 FIFA World Cup: Roberto Martinez leaves Portugal after elimination

Roberto Martinez is no longer the coach of Portugal. Two days after the Selecção das Quinas suffered a 1-0 defeat against Spain in the Round of 16, the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the end of his tenure.

The 52-year-old coach had already announced his departure on Monday evening, ending a three-and-a-half-year spell on the national team bench.

The Portuguese Football Federation officially ended its agreement with Roberto Martinez and his technical staff on Wednesday. During his time in charge, the Spanish coach guided Portugal to qualification for the 2025 Nations League and led the team through the 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, but he failed to deliver the expected results in major competitions. The federation thanked Martinez for his professionalism, commitment and respect toward Portuguese football while already preparing for his successor.

Portugal must now find a new leader to revive its ambitions after another disappointing tournament exit. Jorge Jesus remains the leading candidate to take over the national team, as the Portuguese federation searches for a coach capable of restoring a winning mentality and guiding the Seleção toward new objectives after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
