Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has made an emotional appeal for unity, urging all stakeholders in the country’s football fraternity to put aside their differences and work together to protect the future of the national team.
Speaking amid the ongoing turmoil surrounding Senegalese football, the experienced defender questioned the damage the dispute was causing to the country’s reputation on the international stage.
“Do we really have to embarrass ourselves like this on the world stage?” Koulibaly asked, calling for an end to internal conflicts that have overshadowed years of progress.
The Al Hilal centre-back stressed that personal rivalries and power struggles risk undoing the sacrifices that have helped establish Senegal as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
“Let’s put an end to these ego battles that only divide us. We must not waste years of hard work, sacrifice, and progress,” he said.
Koulibaly also urged those involved in the crisis to make decisions that would safeguard the future of Senegalese football and inspire the next generation.
“Let’s come to our senses and make the right decisions for the good of Senegalese football. Let’s do it so our younger generation can continue inspiring an entire nation,” he added.
The former Chelsea and Napoli defender acknowledged that responsibility for the current situation lies with multiple parties, insisting that everyone must show honesty and humility in resolving the crisis.
“There are many people at fault. Everyone must take responsibility with honesty and humility. Because today, it’s not just our football that’s suffering but it’s Senegal’s image as well,” Koulibaly said.
He concluded with a rallying message of hope, expressing confidence that Senegalese football can recover if unity prevails.
“If we continue down this path, we won’t move our football forward… we’ll only set it back. A lion may fall… but a lion always rises again.”
