Deschamps Says “Toxic Atmosphere” Prompted France Exit

Outgoing France head coach Didier Deschamps has revealed that he chose to step down after 14 years in charge because the environment surrounding the national team had become increasingly difficult.

Speaking after France’s 6-4 defeat to England at the FIFA World Cup on Saturday, Deschamps said his decision to leave was driven by what he believes is best for the team rather than personal reasons.

The 57-year-old had already announced last year that he would not renew his contract beyond the tournament.

“I felt it was the right time to stop,” Deschamps said in an interview with M6.

“The decision was not about me. I truly believed it was in the best interest of the French national team because the atmosphere around me had become too oppressive.

The team deserves better.”

Throughout his tenure, Deschamps was often criticised for adopting a pragmatic approach that prioritised organisation, discipline and results over entertaining football, despite having a squad filled with world-class attacking talent.

He added that his earlier announcement to leave had helped ease the pressure surrounding the team.

“Since my departure was confirmed, the atmosphere around the French team has improved,” he said.

Deschamps took over as France coach in 2012 and leaves behind one of the most successful managerial records in the country’s history.

He guided Les Bleus to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title, adding to the legacy he began as captain when he led France to their first World Cup triumph on home soil in 1998.
