Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne says the team is embracing the expectations that come with being defending champions as they prepare to begin their campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria heads into the tournament as the reigning champions after lifting a record-extending 10th continental title at the 2024 edition, with Justine Madugu’s side widely tipped to challenge for another crown.
Beyond defending their African title, the Super Falcons will also be aiming to secure a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, as the tournament doubles as the continent’s qualifying competition.
Speaking ahead of the championship, Payne admitted that the pressure on Nigeria is inevitable but believes the squad has the experience and quality to meet expectations.
“It is known that Nigeria has this reputation of being the Giants of Africa,” Payne said in an interview with FIFPRO.
“Playing for the Super Falcons carries a lot of responsibility, and there is always the expectation that we should win the WAFCON.”
The midfielder also looked back on the team’s triumph at the previous edition, describing the victory as a defining moment for many members of the squad.
“Winning our 10th WAFCON title was an incredible achievement,” she said.
“For many of us, it was our first WAFCON tournament and our first major international trophy, so it was a very special moment that meant a lot to the entire team.”
The Super Falcons will be aiming to build on that success when they begin their title defence in Morocco, with hopes of retaining their continental dominance and booking a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
