WAFCON 2026: Married Couple Make History Despite South Africa’s Defeat to Tanzania

History was made at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Monday, July 27, as South Africa’s Robyn Moodaly and her wife, Gabriela Salgado, became the first married couple to feature together in the same match at the continental tournament.

The historic milestone came during South Africa’s Group A opening fixture against Tanzania.

Although Banyana Banyana suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat, the match will be remembered for the unique achievement recorded by the two players.

Moodaly and Salgado were both named in South Africa’s squad for the encounter, making them the first married couple to play together in a WAFCON match since the competition began.

Their appearance marked a significant moment in African women’s football, highlighting the continued growth of the game and its increasing inclusiveness.

While South Africa endured a disappointing start to their campaign with the loss to Tanzania, the occasion provided a memorable off-the-pitch milestone that will remain part of WAFCON history.

Nigeria, the defending champions and record holders with 10 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles, remain the team to beat at the 2026 tournament as they continue the defence of the crown they won in the previous edition.
