WAFCON 2026: Malawi Sink Egypt to Maintain Perfect Start Despite Late Scare

Malawi continued their impressive campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations with a commanding 3-1 victory over Egypt, making it two wins from two in the group stage.

The Scorchers made a dream start to the contest, taking the lead through Rose Kadzere after a superb team move. Temwa Chawinga showed outstanding composure to control the ball before delivering a perfectly weighted assist, allowing Kadzere to finish confidently and put Malawi 1-0 ahead.

Malawi doubled their advantage before the break when Faith Chinzimu reacted quickest after her initial header was brilliantly saved by Egyptian goalkeeper Maha Shehata, pouncing on the rebound to make it 2-0.

The Scorchers carried their momentum into the second half, with captain Temwa Chawinga getting on the scoresheet. The prolific forward finished off another well-worked attacking move to extend Malawi’s lead to 3-0, capping another influential display.

Egypt’s hopes received a boost when Malawi were reduced to 10 players after Rose Alufandika was shown a red card for a foul on Habiba Essam. The numerical advantage helped Egypt pull a goal back through Eman Hassan, whose strike made it 3-1 and marked Egypt’s first goal of this year’s WAFCON.

Despite playing the closing stages with one player fewer, Malawi remained composed to see out the victory and secure maximum points once again.

The result leaves the Scorchers with two wins from two matches, underlining their status as one of the standout teams in the competition, while Egypt face an early elimination from the tournament.
