The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has warned FIFA President Gianni Infantino of possible legal action following the collapse of a controversial proposal to sell stakes in FIFA’s major tournaments.
UEFA has also instructed FIFA to preserve all documents and electronic records linked to the abandoned plan.
The proposal, known as the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), sought to attract outside investment by offering shares in FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup.
The initiative drew strong opposition from UEFA, as well as the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).
UEFA had earlier warned that its 55 member associations could boycott FIFA competitions if the plan was implemented.
Following widespread criticism, Infantino announced that the proposal had been withdrawn, saying divisions within the global football community made it impossible to proceed.
However, reports indicate UEFA has formally notified FIFA and several potential investors that it is considering legal proceedings.
The governing body has also demanded that FIFA preserve all relevant documents and electronically stored information that could be used in any future investigation or legal process.
