“We Won on the Pitch” — Ibrahim Mbaye Shrugs Off CAF Decision After Hakimi Exchange

Ibrahim Mbaye has played down the significance of CAF’s recent decision surrounding the AFCON outcome, insisting that, for him, the result on the pitch remains the only verdict that matters.

Speaking candidly, Mbaye revealed he had little reaction to the ruling, maintaining that his sense of victory remains unchanged. “I didn’t have any particular reaction, because we won on the pitch. We have the medal, it’s still at my place, and the trophy is at home,” he said. “For me, nothing changes — we won on the pitch.”

The player also disclosed that he was initially unaware of CAF’s decision, only learning about it through Achraf Hakimi. According to Mbaye, Hakimi reached out to inform him of the development, highlighting how the news filtered through players rather than official channels. “I wasn’t even aware of it at first; it was Achraf Hakimi who informed me about the CAF decision. He told me: ‘Did you see the news? They gave us the trophy.’”

Despite the controversy, Mbaye emphasized that their conversation remained brief and largely matter-of-fact. He reiterated his personal stance, underlining that his achievement stands regardless of administrative decisions. “As far as I’m concerned, I won AFCON,” he added, noting that further discussions between the two players were kept private.

The comments reflect a broader sentiment among players who prioritize results earned on the field over decisions made off it, as debate continues to swirl around CAF’s ruling.
