AFCON 2027 is now under serious threat as growing delays raise doubts about the ability of the three host nations to deliver on time. AFCON 2027, initially awarded to Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, could be relocated according to concerns raised after an inspection by Confederation of African Football.
The tournament, scheduled from June 19 to July 18, 2027, marks a historic first with three host countries, but preparation issues now cast a shadow over this ambitious project.
A report following the inspection highlights multiple shortcomings, particularly in stadium construction and infrastructure development. In Uganda, none of the venues inspected currently meet the required Category 4 standards, the highest level demanded by CAF. In the middle of these concerns, AFCON 2027 faces increasing uncertainty as projects such as the Hoima stadium and renovations at Nelson Mandela National Stadium continue to lag behind schedule.
With time running out, CAF could be forced to consider alternative solutions, including a potential relocation to South Africa, a nation experienced in hosting major tournaments. Authorities remain cautious for now, but AFCON 2027 continues to generate debate across the continent as the race against time intensifies.
