AFCON 2027 (Q): Malawi coach Pasuwa calls for tactical discipline ahead of Angola clash

Malawi National Football Team head coach Kalisto Pasuwa has called for tactical discipline as the Flames prepare to face Angola in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group B qualifier at Estádio 11 de Novembro on Tuesday.

The Flames head into the encounter with three points following a 2-1 victory over South Sudan in their opening qualifier at Bingu National Stadium, but Pasuwa says playing away from home will require a more cautious and disciplined approach.

“Having carried the win at home, we wanted that victory because it gave our side confidence to say we can do it,” said Pasuwa. “Now we are playing our second game away from home, so the approach needs to be very careful.”

Pasuwa said the Flames will need to maintain their shape and find the right balance between attack and defence, particularly during transitions. “At home, we played with seven players in front of the ball and three behind the ball. This time, we need to be mindful of the transitions,” he said.

With the Flames looking to build on their opening result, Pasuwa has also called on supporters back home to continue rallying behind the team. “We know we are playing away from home, but we are with them in their minds. We are fighting for the country and we are carrying the badge,” said Pasuwa.

The Flames have three points from one match in Group B, while Egypt lead the group with four points from two matches.

A positive result in Luanda would strengthen Malawi’s position in the early stages of the qualification campaign.
