George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor marked their Super Eagles debuts in memorable fashion as their goals helped Nigeria come from behind to defeat Madagascar 2-1 in their opening Group L match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in Uyo on Friday.
Madagascar took the lead and looked set to frustrate the hosts, but Nigeria responded strongly after the break, with debutant Ilenikhena and Usor finding the net to complete a comeback victory for Eric Chelle’s side.
The result extends Nigeria’s impressive record against Madagascar in AFCON qualifying.
The Super Eagles have now recorded four wins and one draw in their five qualifying meetings with the Barea.
Chelle handed 19-year-old forward George Ilenikhena his first start for the senior national team, and the youngster repaid the coach’s faith with a goal on his international debut.
The match also provided another landmark moment for Moses Simon, who made his 100th appearance for Nigeria.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali returned to the starting lineup for the Super Eagles for the first time since the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
Taiwo Awoniyi and Tolu Arokodare also returned to the national team setup as Nigeria began their campaign with three points.
The victory puts Nigeria second in Group L, while Guinea-Bissau currently occupy top spot after defeating Tanzania 2-0 away from home.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to their second qualifying fixture when they travel to face Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
Nigeria will be looking to build on the victory in Uyo and strengthen their position in the race for qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
