Morocco and Gabon are set for a top-of-the-table clash in Group A of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers. This matchup is fast becoming a classic on the continent.
The Atlas Lions and the Panthers have faced each other on the international stage 21 times to date. Since 1977, the two teams have met on numerous occasions. Morocco holds the upper hand with 11 victories, compared to 6 for Gabon, alongside 4 draws. The Atlas Lions have scored a total of 48 goals while conceding 22.
The first encounter between Morocco and Gabon took place in April 1977, resulting in a decisive 4–0 victory for Morocco in Rabat. They also faced off during the qualifiers for the 2004 and 2025 AFCON tournaments. In the latter instance, Morocco achieved a double victory: a 4–1 win in the first leg was followed by an even more emphatic 5–1 triumph in the return leg. The Panthers’ last victory against the Atlas Lions on Moroccan soil dates back to 2019, when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and his teammates won a friendly match in Tangier 3–2.
