Algeria: The truth behind the Zinedine Zidane myth

The widely shared tale of Zinedine Zidane‘s missed opportunity with Algeria could be nothing more than a myth, challenging one of the country’s most famous football stories.

According to La Gazette du Fennec, journalist Lakhdar Berriche reveals that he asked the former Real Madrid No. 10 the question directly.

Zidane’s answer is unequivocal: no official from the Algerian Football Federation ever approached him when he was a young player.

Another piece of evidence supports this account. At the time this incident is said to have occurred, Zidane was already playing for French youth teams.

FIFA regulations at the time did not allow him to change his sporting nationality. This clarification puts an end to a rumor that has fueled debate for many years.
