Assane Diao’s Early Strike Counts for Little as Injury-Hit Como Fall to Feyenoord

Senegalese forward Assane Diao made an impressive start to Como 1907’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Feyenoord, scoring the opening goal before an injury forced him off early in the first half.

The 21-year-old attacker gave the Italian side an 18th-minute lead at De Kuip with a superb individual effort that highlighted his pace, strength and composure in front of goal.

Diao latched onto a long ball from defender Jacobo Ramón and used his physical strength to hold off Feyenoord defender Javi López inside the penalty area. After creating space, the forward curled a fine finish beyond goalkeeper Tjark Ernst to put Como ahead.

It was a promising moment for Diao, who demonstrated his ability to make an impact on the European stage with a clinical finish under pressure.

However, the Senegalese forward’s evening was abruptly cut short. After sustaining an injury shortly after scoring, he was forced to leave the pitch in the 22nd minute and was replaced by Jesús Rodríguez.

His early departure was a setback for Como and head coach Cesc Fàbregas, who lost an attacking outlet capable of stretching Feyenoord’s defence and creating opportunities in the final third.

Despite Diao’s absence, Como continued to compete against their Dutch opponents, but Feyenoord eventually turned the contest around to secure a 3-2 victory.

Diao’s contribution was brief, yet his opening goal provided a reminder of his attacking potential. His ability to control a difficult pass, withstand defensive pressure and finish accurately made him an early standout before injury intervened.

Attention will now turn to the extent of the forward’s injury and his availability for Como’s upcoming fixtures, as the Italian side assesses the condition of one of its attacking options following a frustrating night in Rotterdam.
