Moroccan international Chemsdine Talbi provided the single moment of magic at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday evening, producing a sublime 71st-minute chip to hand Sunderland a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Hull City in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
In a tightly contested fixture where clear-cut opportunities proved scarce for over an hour, the 21-year-old winger’s composure in transition made all the difference, punishing Hull’s over-commitment on a set piece to book the Black Cats’ place in the round of 16.
For the first 60 minutes, the contest remained largely balanced, with Hull threatening via set pieces while Sunderland controlled positional play. The breakthrough finally arrived directly from a Hull corner kick.
