Barcelona wrapped up their preseason campaign with a 2-1 victory over Al Ahly to claim the Joan Gamper Trophy in front of their home supporters.
Hamza Abdelkarim opened the scoring in the 30th minute, continuing his impressive preseason form. The 18-year-old Egyptian has now scored four goals during Barcelona’s preparations for the new campaign.
Raphinha doubled Barcelona’s advantage from the penalty spot before halftime, giving Hansi Flick’s side a comfortable lead heading into the break.
Al Ahly responded early in the second half to reduce the deficit, but Barcelona held on to secure victory. Anthony Gordon had an opportunity to restore the two goal advantage late in the match but missed from the penalty spot.
The evening also provided a first opportunity for Barcelona supporters to welcome new signing Rodri, who received loud cheers during the squad presentation.
João Cancelo, however, missed his presentation moment because of delays with the necessary paperwork. Frenkie de Jong also received a mixed reception, with some supporters booing while others responded with chants in his support.
Flick and Raphinha later rallied the Barcelona faithful, promising to fight for every available trophy as the club turns its attention to the competitive campaign.
With LaLiga set to begin this weekend, Barcelona will hope their unbeaten preseason has laid the foundation for another successful season.
