Norwegian champions FK Bodø/Glimt are steadily strengthening their presence in West Africa through a growing academy project in The Gambia, as part of a long-term strategy to identify and develop emerging talent from the region.
The initiative is already yielding tangible results, with a clear pathway to Europe firmly in place. Four young prospects made the journey to Norway last year to continue their development, adding to two others who had taken the same route in 2024. The steady movement of players underscores the club’s commitment to providing opportunities beyond the continent.
At the heart of the project is a structured and demanding development environment. The academy currently accommodates 35 players under the age of 19, all engaged in an intensive program that includes six training sessions per week. The focus is not only on technical growth but also on instilling discipline, tactical awareness, and the physical demands required at the European level.
Bodø/Glimt’s model reflects a broader trend of European clubs investing directly in grassroots football across Africa, but their hands-on approach in The Gambia stands out for its clear progression route and sustained engagement.
With early success stories already emerging, the Norwegian side appears to be laying the foundation for a pipeline that could benefit both the club and West African football in the years ahead.
